AHK and TVET in Kenya

In the field of Vocational Education and Training, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Kenya (AHK Kenya) has been active since 2013. Following a survey amongst members of the German Business Association Kenya (GBA) on investment barriers, which identified poor technical and vocational training as one of the main problems, the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Kenya (AHK Kenya) organized the 1st German-Kenyan Vocational Training Conference, during which, for the first time, policy makers, private sector, development and research stakeholders came together to discuss vocational training matters. As a consequence of this conference, the Permanent Working Group on Vocational Education and Training (PWG) with the mandate to advise the government and promote business initiatives, was established in 2014. Since the beginning of the PWG, AHK Kenya has been serving as its secretariat responsible for the concerns of this Think Tank, which meanwhile hosts 150 member organizations. The organization of the Hands-on-the-future National Conference in cooperation with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) at the end of January 2017, which was attended by 750 experts and the first Kenya National Skills Show with over 120 exhibitors and 3,000 visitors are the most recent highlights of the work of the PWG.

AHK Kenya advises German companies on the establishment of dual vocational training initiatives, including obtaining licenses, quality assurance and certification according to DIHK certificates, in Kenya and cooperates with the German Development Cooperation partners GIZ and KfW Development Bank on matters regarding Vocational Training. As part of the coordination work for the PWG, the Delegation is working also closely with various international TVET actors, such as the World Bank, USAID, Collèges et Institutes Canada as well as Kenyan Ministries and Public Agencies dealing with TVET.
